A denim rotation that makes jeans worth repeating
Jeans are the easiest garment to rewear and the most overwashed. A simple rotation, spot cleaning, and airing keep denim in play for weeks without the stiffness of a fresh wash every time.
Wash less, spot clean more
Denim does not need a full wash after every wear. Unless there is a stain or real odor, airing jeans overnight handles most of it. For small marks, spot clean with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then hang to dry. This is also how the fabric keeps its color and shape longer, so the jeans look better on the tenth wear than they would after ten washes.
Build a three-pair rotation
Two or three pairs in rotation beat one pair washed constantly. Assign roles loosely: one dark pair for evenings and offices, one mid-wash for weekends, one relaxed pair for errands. Resting a pair for two or three days between wears lets the fabric recover its shape, which matters more than most people expect. Nobody tracks which pair you wore Tuesday.
Make repeats invisible
- Change the top half completely: a blazer reads differently than a knit, even with identical jeans.
- Swap shoes and belt; footwear changes the whole register of an outfit.
- Cuff or uncuff depending on the shoe, which changes the silhouette for free.
- Keep one pair slightly dressier so repeats at work-adjacent events still pass.
When to actually wash
Wash when jeans smell after airing, when the knees have permanently relocated, or when a stain sets. Wash cold, inside out, and skip the dryer when you can. Aired, rested, and washed only when needed, good denim can go weeks between washes and look better for it.
